 Morningdew's kits

Snowflakes gently drifted down from a clouded sky, giving the landscape a grayish hue. Morningdew watched as the tiny ice crystals melted into the water when they touched it, joining its brethen. A gust of wind suddenly lifted the settling flakes that had landed on the smooth boulder that Morningdew was perched upon. She blinked lazily as they blew in her eyes, driven by the cold morning air.
I probably shouldn't even be out here, she thought, resting her tender gaze upon her swollen belly. She let her thoughts wander freely, her heart quicking with excitement when she wondered how many kits there were. Three, maybe just two even.
She began to gently lick her belly as if to comfort the little ones inside. I will be the best mom ever, she told herself confidently.
By now, the snow was beginning to fall down in heavier sheets. She realized that she had better get going back to the nursury. She had just come out by the river to seep up the best rays of sunshine before the afternoon flurry clouds would swallow them up in their muted arms of gray.
She took one last glance at the partially frozen river, enjoying its gurgling song before turning around to head back towards camp.
When Morningdew was at the very edge of the rocky outcrop that made up Sunningrocks, she suddenly began to jerk invoulintarily, falling over into the snow where she lay, writhing.
She wailed in fear and agony. She felt herself begin to contract. StarClan, no! They're coming too soon! she sceamed in her mind.
Then- it was over. Morningdew lay there in the biting snow in a dazed heap. She finally mustered up enough courage to sit up. She looked around in bewilderment, shaking snow off of her trembling body. I'd better get back.
She took a cautious step, afraid that she might trigger another spasm. When it didn't, she began a slow walk, then a trot.
She had just begun to think that she was well again when another contraction began racking her body.
Morningdew could almost feel the kits begining to shove their way out of her. Shelter. Shelter. The thought was was a pulse, instinct dragging her conciousness to and fro.
She knew naught how she dragged herself underneath a nearby bush, nor any memory of her doing so.
The spasm finally stopped.
Morningdew, too afraid to move, crouched beneath that bush for what seemed ages. The occansional contraction beleagured her, and she soon fould out that the less she move, the weaker they were.
But the time finally came when being stationary would not affect them.

A loud caturwaul sliced through the frozen atmosphere.

Morningdew huddled low over two wet bundles.
No matter how hard she tried- digging up dry leaves for a makeshift nest, balling up in a protective circle around her flesh for flesh...

I have failed.

The kits were stillborns. Morningdew stared, heart-broken, at her two would-be first kits. Why, StarClan, why? She gently licked the head of a stiff, silver tabby tom, then turned to a rusty tabby brother, and bestowed upon his frosty forehead a farewell kiss. She stared silently at the two perfect little faces, the only imperfection -the frost that covered minute details.
Morningdew wrapped herself around their frozen little bodies, closing her eyes.
Never to become apprentices. Never to become warriors. There will be no gatherings, battles won or lost, for you, my loves. She hoped that with all her heart that her two kits would be given an honorable spot in the ranks of StarClan.

Morningdew soon dropped into deep sleep as exhaustion washed over her like a comforting wave. She did not care if she lived or died.

A cold wind blew, stirring up flurries of pure snow that danced a slow, sad waltz over a huddled heap of long, grey fur that had a light coating of frost on it. Usually, all of the snow would be packed down into a dirty slush, the kind that a true ThunderClanner or WindClanner would despise trodding upon; a wet, cold earth that stuck to one's paws and bit the skin inbetween the delicate toes and pads. The odd bit of light, fluffy snow that drifted around the bush the she-cat lay under began to twist and turn in ways not thought possible. The main body of the swirling mass seperated into two smaller flurries, the wind pushing and spiraling the snow, forming five protrusions on each flurry; four of the oddities bent downward to form legs, short and thick, the other protrusion lifted up in the form of a friendly tail greeting. Finally came the petite heads, the snow meeting at points to form ears, and two escecially thick clumps of snow that arranged themselves to form bright, white eyes adorned each head.

Goodbye, Mother. I wish I could've stayed and gotten to know you. I'll miss you with all of my still heart.

I'm positive that you would've been the best Mother any kit could ever dream of. I'll miss you with all of my frozen heart.

The two snow spirits began to ascend; as if walking up some glorious set of invisible stairs to StarClan. Frozenkit and Stillkit paused to take one last long, tender and warm gaze at Morningdew, their mother. Then at long last, the wind carried away the souls of the two kits, leaving behind a trail of snow, pure and cold. As the remainder of their short-term snow bodies drifted down, one of the denser snowflakes landed on Morningdew's nose, melting into the puddle of gray fur.

Don't give up, dear Mother. You still have a purpose.

ooc//: There may be a little powerplaying with Stillkit, Lily, but I think you told me that it was okay at the very begining.
